Sowing grass seed in stony soil

Aah, sorry I forgot to mention we're planning on a raised rockery area, and a small bank for wildflowers etc. So the soil from the remaining pond dig out we're planning to put in there. But I can see your point so will see if I can negotiate that we finish that first and then seed afterwards.

I'll make sure I heel it 3 times - am wondering if I'll have heels left afterwards as am suffering from achilles tendinitis at the moment, but hopefully it'll do them some good. image

Thanks for the advice Verdun, and to everyone else too.

Heel in one direction, rake, then heel at right angles and rake.

Thanks for the further advice hogweed. I heeled and raked over several times today - it may have done my heels good actually, but it was very tiring. I'm a little disappointed with how I did levelling wise, as there were some stubborn bumps and dips, but compared to what the garden was like before it will hopefully be much improved. We've seeded today so I will post an update photo to hopefully show a happy lawn later in the year.

I thought I'd post an update of how the grass is growing so far - it's mostly doing well on the shaded side, I guess because it's damper there for now.

Here's the first few blades of grass as they came through:

And here it is beginning to thicken up:

We used the Rolawn Medallion grass seed and it seems to have taken fairly well so far.

Yes we're really pleased so far Verdun. I forgot to say that it began to germinate just 6 days after seeding so we were very impressed considering our ground isn't that great.

We're definitely expecting to have to overseed in Spring. Fairygirl mentioned earlier that the winter rain brought up stones to the surface in her garden, so we're expecting it'll be the same for us. There are also a definite few dips that we reckon we might need to fill, but I think we should wait and see what it's like in Spring and then do repair and patch-up work then.

The other surprising thing is that the birds completely left the seed alone. I expected there to be masses patrolling the garden but none so far. I guess we've been lucky this time.

Looking good Lucid - always nice when a project comes together  image

Mine has settled a bit more and I'll probably add some extra soil and grass seed in spring too. I had to be careful round all the edges when I sowed, as it was very windy and kept blowing onto the path!  I've sown a bit more along them and it's greened up quite well, but I'll also review that in spring. image
