    Verdun, I'd just go to the garden centre and pick up a bag of each to compare...  I think the weight depends on how the compost has been stored, and therefore how wet it is.

    My dad used mushroom compost on our family garden in Herts in my childhood - he reckoned it helped break up the clay. It was quite alkaline though, so he had to take care where he used it.  I still remember its smell... rather pleasant, if you like mushrooms.  image

    Re braking up clay - that was my thought Liri. My soil is neutral to acid and all the usual suspects grow well here so I think that's why I've never considered it. I know Verdun's soil is the opposite to mine so I expect it will be ideal. 

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
