I don't do that until the last minute - when the weather really turns cooler for good - I find the flavour of tomatoes ripened while still on the plant so very much better than those which are picked to 'change colour' on the kitchen windowsill.

Has it been a bad year in general for tomatoes? My Alicante and Gardeners Delight are poor in number and tasteless. Not sure it's worth the effort of ripening them. Top marks for the golden cherry ones though, they are amazing in number and flavour!!
We started late this year (family bereavement) and it looks (so far) as if this could be the best year ever..
We only grow outside toms - the early cherries are ripening beautifully and the flavour is good. Various others, Roma, Anna Russian, Orkado, Black Russian are all of good size and are beginning to ripen nicely - fingers are very crossed - the plants all look healthy

Yes as Monty showed on Gardeners world on friday, strip all the leaves off , it helps the fruit to ripen.
Arghhh, I haven't seen Friday's episode yet! You've given it all away!

I've just taken all the leaves off my outdoor tomatoes - it's going to be a bumper year
Or just pick them and sit them on the kitchen window sill

Could you clarify 'taking the leaves off' please does this simply mean leaving on everything but leaves?
