Victoria Plum Problem
in Fruit & veg
I have a 4 years old Victoria plum tree which is fruiting regularly and which I have been pruning in June. This year one particular branch has produced plums which stopped growing at about a quarter size and then ripened so they are essentially inedible. The leaves on that branch have died off already (it's still August). What could/should I do to stop this happening again ?

Could it be Pocket Plum disease?

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Thanks for the suggestion; however, the plums do have stones which I believe would not be the case with Pocket Plum disease ?
They seemed to be well controlled by ladybirds this year but if you are right do I have to cut away that branch and spray the rest or what ?
The leaves on just the one branch have turned brown while all the others on the tree are still green. There's no obvious reason visible on the branch
Thanks for all this useful information
Hi Terry, I had much the same problem with my Victoria plum last year. By mid-August it was totally denuded, the fruit had ripened weeks earlier than usual and I was sure I was losing it.
Though my gardening skills are non-existent, I heard Monty Don say something about silver-leaf and die-back and then he removed the offending branches.
On a dry day in June I took the loppers to my tree and removed everything that didn't look right to me! Well, the leaves are all still on it this year and the fruit has just started to ripen. I'm quite happy!
Hi Wellygirl
Most of the time, I must confess, gardening is quite a mystery to me; however, since I've had my difficulties with the lady Victoria myself and resorted to removing anything about the tree I didn't like(!), with some success, I looked around for possible answers to your problems and this is what I found:

It's the latter part of his Q/A feature that deals with plums.
Hope it helps!
