    Mimulus

    Frequent in ditches and wet ground in lowland areas, usually near habitation.

    Height c 40-70 cm.  Flower c 3-4 cm in length

    ID: Distinguished from Blood-drop Emlets and its hybrids by: Densely hairy on flower-stalk and calyx-ribs, upper flower-stalks 3 cm or less, flower has lower lip (i.e. lower 3 lobes) much longer than upper lip (i.e upper 2 lobes), flower does not have red blotches on lobes but only small red spots in throat.  Musk (M Moschatus), has much smaller regular-shaped flowers with 5 equal petal-lobes.

    Other features: A well naturalised garden escape, from North America.  Leaves opposite, the lower ones stalked.  Stamens 4, style 1.
