Agapanthus ID

Peanuts3Peanuts3 Posts: 759

We have recently returned from a holiday in Cornwall where I saw these beauties ! The flowers were absolutely huge (about the size of my head), is anyone able to tell me which variety they are as I'd love to try and grow them in Surrey, in my hot sandy bed.

Also, from St Michaels Mount I bought some apaganthus that were labelled as Agapanthus 'Big Blue' which i assume is the variety, however can't find any details on that variety.  Any ideas.

Thanks for any advice.

If you "Google" Agapanthus Big Blue there are various sites about it, such as this one   http://www.tullynurseries.ie/store/product/23632/AGAPANTHUS-africanus-Big-Blue/

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

You could also take a look at Hoyland Plant Centre (South Yorkshire) who have won Chelsea medals for their agapanthus...

  • We went to Madeira for 2 weeks in July, and were blown away by the gorgeous drifts of Agapanthus there

I bought some Midnight Star last year in full bloom and they set seed. I collected some and planted it straight away and got really good germination. I now have a trayful of little plants growing away well. I was amazed how easy they were, and though it will take a year or two till they reach flowering size, it's worth the wait given the cost of new plants. Looking forward to having my own drift!

Midnight Star is gorgeous - a couple of years ago I had a voucher for a present and bought three bulbs and planted them together in a pot.  Each year they've put on a good display, but this year they're fantastic

  • Will agapanthus seed always come true if you collect it from your fave plant? I have had a great show from my white ones (the Bride?) and would love to breed more!

sorry Order , but no, they won't all come true.

They're a fairly promiscuous lot and they cross very easily.

Try it and see what comes up. It's how many new varieties come along.

  • Thanks Hostafan - will do as you say - I guess I can trial them in pots to see what colour they turn out to be rather than putting them straight into the border! This is the first year in my 3 (!) years of flower gardening that I am collecting seed and re-sowing it - it's addictive, isn't it!! I have just re-sowed some astrantia but perhaps I should have waited til spring...never mind, I have plenty more to collect!
