We had a house sale (of my late aunt's) fall through because of knotweed found on survey. Hadn't taken much notice of it before, as we don't seem to have it near us, but it seems it is v difficult to eradicate. It seems to be pretty endemic in that area, it's on every bit of wasteland, so was surprised when the purchaser backed out. Since sold the house, however.
Japanese Knotweed can be treated, but it needs consistent thorough application of the right chemicals - professional firms will provide certificates etc which usually keep mortgage providers/insurance companies happy.
