Himalayan Knotweed

Can anyone tell me if Himalayan Knotweed is as bad as the Japanese variety when it comes to property damage and the likes. Also does anyone know of an effective eradication method. I've just noticed it staring to grow around 30 metres from my house and I think I would like to nip it in the bud before it gets out of hand because I know it spreads like wild fire. Thanks.

I think you are muddling two different plants

Himalayan Balsam. Likes to grow especially near water and damp places. The ripe seeds spread explosively. Invasive foreign import.

Japanese Knotweed. A scourge. Keep your fingers crossed you don't have it anywhere near you. Also an invasive foreign import.

It appears that there are two separate but related plants

    Japanese Knotweed and Himalayn Knotweed

Nothing to do with Himalayn Balsam.

  • Yeah I know it's definitely Himalayan Knotweed. Was just wondering if it's as destructive as Japanese. Seems I can just pull it out though according to pansyface, Cheers image

Think Pansyface was referring to Himalayan Balsam, not Himalayan Knotweed.

The Knotweed will need weedkiller - I'd use glyphosate.

I believe it's illegal to transport either Japanese/Himalayan Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam because you could be distributing the seeds as you're driving along. So pull it up but don't take it to your local tip. Either burn it or leave it in a pile to rot down. Personally I wouldn't put it anywhere near my compost bin.

  • Cool thanks everyone. Yeah its only fresh new shoots and just starting but i've seen it just up the road and it has exploded over the last few years the stuff is relentless. I know the local council have been trying to eradicate it for several years now but judging by the amount of it along the roadside they've failed miserably. I've done a fair bit of reading into it at this stage and although it is as good as becoming established as Japanese it doesn't seem to be as destructive.

Jane, how does one get it to the council tip without transporting it?

    Just a thought.
