Hello again just remember that one plot holder put loads and I mean loads of horse manure on top of weeds , he thought it would get rid of the weeds , he was derinately wrong , he had the biggest weeds I have ever seen image

  • Phew thank you. When you say horse manure and then separately about straw what do you mean?

Did you mean horse manure without straw and then horse manure with lots of straw in - which is exactly what I have access to.

  • Never put fresh manure on plants, let it rot down for a few weeks/months before using directly on plants. I mix some manure in with top soil and compost for a good spring feed for my plants and water it in well.

  • Ah brilliant thanks.

I use manure which is partially rotted down.  I cover the weeded bed with cardboard, a layer of manure, a couple of inches deed and then cover with black plastic.

If done in the autumn it's well rotted down and easy to dig in by the spring and any rogue weeds are easily dug out.

If I run out of black plastic the bed's just covered with a thick layer of muck.

  • The lady in the field next to my allotment said that she is due to have her horse waste collected and did I want a couple of scoops putting over the fence. I said yes please. I am not sure if she pays to have it collected or if someone collects it for free to use on a farm or elsewhere.

I think that I am inclined to put it down in one section, cover as per Zoomer44 and see what happens over winter.

Pic below of her 'pile'. My allotment runs to the left (8.5m) and in line of the big conifer (38m)  There is a gate that needs fixing underneath that tree as well and I am free to go and collect as much as I like.

The fence between us, in line with the conifer is not great but it is low. I was thinking that I could build 6 compost bins along that fence using pallets. Start by filling from 5 down to 1. Then move 5 in to 6, 4 in to 5 etc. etc.

Does that sound like a good plan, to give me plenty of compost?

Hello , personally I would not build all those compost bins , I would just have 1 to store and let it rot down

takes up to much room what you are suggesting in my opion

It will be interesting to see what others image

In fact been at plot today , just have having a beer before dinner

  • Thanks GWS

My plot is roughly 330m2 so I figured that I could use some of that space to create a lot of compost cheaply and relatively easily.

Do you think that would be too much compost?

Mmm beer would be nice but they don't serve it on the train from Leeds to Rotherham.

Hello , beer was good , hope the journey is not to bad

My plot is 30 x 130 ft , not sure what that is in metres

I have 4 plastic compost bins which I obtained at no cost and that is enough for me

It depends on how much time you want spend on composting

    I do not compost weeds

Just being nosy , how long have you had your plot ?
