  • Dig large holes, twice as large as pots, square, not round, put in a sandy loam soil, Jack's Magic, light feed and plant. Good luck. Most grasses are tough.
  • if root bound, square holes lets the plants know that they are out of their round pots and roots then can grow better.

Whats wrong with Jacks Magic? Great mix and light. Light feed in clay soil as does not contain nutrients
  • Come come children no falling out you know the nanny motto caring and sharing . Oops sorry guys have had the grandchildren to stay for the week and got mistakenimage

Back on track B3 I would pick a  mix of what everyone suggests and cross your fingersimage

All advice gratefully accepted. Will add some compost from heap and have bought general fertilizer with 17% nitrogen. Wondered if lawn fertilizer would have been better but was advised by garden centre that it would be too strong.

They did come in squarish pots! Frankly, the soil is so heavy, I'll be happy to get a hole in it regardless of shape! That rain last night should have made it workable without risk of bending fork tines.

Please don't be too good chaps. It's good to have a healthy debate. I'm new to grasses and didn't realise there was such variety and passion!

Just digging over bed, pulling out weeds and bad doers. The soil is very workable after all that rain. However, I have buried my trowel and have given up looking for it. Do you think it might grow into a spade?

Your enthusiasm is very infectious. I am looking forward to growing my little prairie.
