How are you growing them, horseygirl? How many?

are they in a line or a block. ?

They have to be wind pollinated, tapping the stems to disperse pollen on the air helps.

  • They are in a line, in an L shape. I've been been giving the stems a shake. Had a look today and one of them is starting to 'yellow up' so fingers crossed because I've really been looking forward to eating them.
  • I have 9, did have 10 but one had an unfortunate end when the cat decided to try and attack it.

Sweetcorn are best grown in a block, it helps with the pollination. With only 9plants I would do a 3rows of 3.

Being greedy, I put in two packets of seed and have 7rows of 10, planted about 15 inch apart. Even then , I sometimes find the ones on the outside edge do not get 100% pollination.

  • Ah, I wish I had room for that amount. Next year I will do a block at the back of my veg patch and see how that goes. If I had my way I'd pull the lawn out and have a bigger veg patch.

Last night I found lots of mine lying horizontal. Might have been wind, or a cat? Anyway, propped up with sticks, they should survive, plants are hardy.

  • Harvested my first 4 cobs today. They look good.

If you leave the cobs too long and they are inedible, leave the cobs on the ground for the birds; they love them.
