I found two of my sweetcorn plant collapsed today.. I have never had that happen before.. Maybe a cat jumped of my shed roof on them, no real clues, think they have had it now.. Just as I had the flowering heads too.

Chicky - you can also (if you time it right and have a good summer) grow climbing beans up the sweetcorn plants.  The idea comes from south America; known as the 'three sisters' as they grow so well together.  You don't half need a lot of muck and water though!

    Fidget - what a lovely-looking crop!

I'm growing mini pop, two beds planted 4wks apart. The 1st bed has grown in a dome, the plants must have followed the sun. The plants at the side are about 4ft tall and the one's in the middle must be 6ft, I'm 5ft8, they are beginning to flower at the top with some cobs devloping so me thinks I can start picking as mini pop doesn't need to be pollinated and are picked small.

I've planted squash to weave in and out at the bottom of the plants down one side and dwarf french beans in between down the other side. It's a narrow bed and the beans are within reach from the side to pick.

It certainly keeps down the weeds and there's 3 crops in one area. Couldn't get my head arounds planting beans to climb up the plants as you'd need to leave enough room between rows to walk.

It's good in a narrow(ish) raised bed so you can reach the middle from the edges.  You can't walk between the rows as that's where the squashes go.  And it compacts the soil of course.  But whatever suits - there are no rules!

  • Had a few of our cobs this weekend, yum! Just wish the money maker tomatoes were ripe!

Only had two red ones and when cut open they both had black mould inside think I may have to destroy the plant and discard the fruit.... any thoughts on it or should I post a new thread?

I'd post a new thread LMS - there are a few tomato experts on the forum, but they're unlikely to look in on a sweetcorn thread.

our silk tassles are now going brown - will be harvesting a few this week (with my umbrellaimageimage)
