Barry Island, thank you for going to so much trouble to source the information and post links, I agree this does look like a good idea.
Runnybreak, I have no problem with your idea as long as the final height (when sunken) is still 2.4 metres. Could you confirm this please? as I assumed it started at 2.4 then got sunken by at least 40cm Thanks
For the last 19 years we've used a homemade prop to keep our laundry off the ground - just a piece of wood with a notch in the top and pointy at the bottom. However, we've just replaced this with an extending prop which we bought for about £3 in the market in Diss when we were visiting recently and this is proving really useful.

Meomye if you have the drill and bit and are able to drill a steel tube you could get a steel tube like this one http://www.themetalstore.co.uk/products/galvanised-tube I would advise the 42 diameter and you could drill a hole right through it about 10cm from the top and fit one of these http://www.tecni-cable.co.uk/M8x80mm-A4-AISI-316-Stainless-Steel-Collared-Eyebolt-with-Nut-Washer-MBL-1300kgs-208-267-408 and cap it off with one of these to keep the rain out http://www.parrs.co.uk/traffic-pedestrian-control-c665/kee-klamp-galvanised-tubes-fittings-c192/plastic-end-cap-pp8157/s50717?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term=kee-klamp-plastic-end-cap-description-to-suit-tube-dia-34mm-description-to-suit-tube-dia-34mm-atf088&utm_campaign=product%2Blisting%2Bads&gclid=CIznjM7VlMcCFeHMtAods8wC6g hope this helps.
