When we go to England and stay in Eastbourne (DIL and grandchildren) we go to Paradise Park in Newhaven, lots of clematis choice. But I really liked a little nursery with a garden to visit called "Marchants Hardy Plants". I also like Merriments Gardens which also have a garden centre and nursery attached.

Now we are buying a cottage in Norfolk and I look forward to exploring garden centres there and especially Peter Beales "Classic Roses".

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

In Nottinghamshire (Normanton)  there's Reg Taylor's which is pricey but very high quality and the staff are very knowledgable (albeit it's a miracle if you get any of them to crack a smile!).

Holleybeck near Southwell is good for plants although again the staff could do with some customer service training.

Belton Garden Centre is nice and has a good range. Smiley nice staff always happy to help with heavy items.

Downtown Garden Centre on the A1 is good. Large range of plants.

Frosts Nursery is good too. Excellent value for money and very helpful staff.

Ruben Shaws has a great range too and a good price.

Westbridgeford Garden Centre is worth popping in to for garden accessories.

Finding a good Garden Centre is like finding treasure!

  • In Wiltshire I know of three good nurseries around me there may well be others but that is the three that I can think of.

The Botanic Nursery,Atworth. They hold the national collection of Foxgloves. (Closed in Winter.)

The Mead Nursery, Brokerswood, Westbury. (Also closed in winter.)

West Kington Nuseries, Chippenham. Wholesale nursery but has public sale days in April and September.

  • Now, I regularly go to Caerphilly Garden Centre, which has upped it's game in the last couple of years and is still my first choice and has nothing to fear from the new Cardiff Wyevale.

I'm lucky enought to live 1 mile away from Ashwoods Nursery at Kingswinford which is the best I have ever been to.  Excellent choice, really knowledgable staff and I can honestly say that in all the times I have visited I have never seen a diseased, dying or droopy plant. (The cafe sells the most fantastic homemake cakes too)

Hi from Kingswinford in the West Midlands
  • Happy, where in North london? B&Q in Watford is good for reducing plants. I recently bought three massive pots of achillea for £2.5 each and a nandina for £5.

Smiths Nurseries in Uxbridge is another good one and so is Flowerland in Iver (these two are not far from each other).

Van Hage in Chenies is ok.

Aylett Nurseries on the way to the Galleria is a little pricey but good for ideas.

Further afield, Butters and also Baytree, not far from Spalding are good too. I got 2 callicarpa complete with purple berries from Butters for £2.50 each.

Just replied to another North Londoner who posted a similar question.  Have a look at the post, it has some recommendations specifically in our area of London, mainly around Crews Hill in Enfield.

On previous page - Northernlass2  - the is no plant centre at Floors Castle. Well worth going to see the gardens though.

I also buy from Parkers sales, I love them but let's not get started on the usual 10 pages about how bad they are, please.

You just said that to annoy me Lyn! image

Though I have to say they have been very, very, very good for at least the last three years or so, I haven't ordered nor  received anything from them in that time!

  • I would recommend the Pacific GC in Staffordshire. Very good , healthy plants and all the staff are always ready to give sound advice to anyone who require it. Prices are not over the top either. Although I find GC ok most of the big ones are now so mass producing it is hard to find anything "green" to plant out.

I prefer, possicle like a lot on here, producing my own plants and growing then on for my garden or selling at car boots
