have I killed it?

B3B3 Posts: 27,476
I neglected my phalaris arundinacea (gardeners garters) Had it for years and it seemed to thrive on neglect up to a point. Started to ignore it when a Fox pooed in the middle of it and then forgot about it. It's dried up through lack of water. My question is might it revive if I water it in the same way grass greens up again or is it a lost cause?

You have nothing to lose so try it and see. Is it in a pot?

I have this strange vision in my mind of a fox pooing in a pot! image

Have you tried watering it then, maybe remove the poo.

It is/was pretty big, about 3ft across. It got pooed on late spring when I would have tidied it removing last years leaves but the smell was so bad, I just gave it a wide berth so I did not notice it's gradual decline over the last month. It's been very dry here apart from a couple of days last week.

It's very invasive up here - and we get a lot of rain, so worth trying a good soaking image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Will do. Maybe the roots are still alive. Thanks for advice, all.

Update: gave it a good soaking last night. the stems with brown/yellow leaves which are still soft have perked up. Have got rid of most of the papery leaves. I think I panicked. Heavy dry clay keeps it from becoming a pest.

Should I still give it a haircut?

You'd have to go some to kill it methinks. It spreads  like the bejeesus.

  • I managed to kill an oriental poppy earlier this year. It flowered then I chopped it back like you are supposed to do and it turned up its toes! I didn't think that was even possible!
