Talkback: How to grow astrantias

I grew some last year in dappled shade and they were beautiful; the bees loved them, but sadly they didn't come back up this year. Do I need to plant them every year?

No they're perennial and usually very reliable. Did they look OK at the end of last season?

They like a moist root run, but there is always the possibility that the roots have rotted away if they are in ground that is bog-like...

We were going to plant some this year but they sound like divas to me image

  • Please try them, they are not divas, they self seed all over my garden. I have found Roma a very reliable one that increases in size each year.

Yes i definitely will blossom, in my shady garden I cannot afford not to try plants that like shade.

My soil is acid clay and RHS site seems to think they will grow pretty much anywhere.

I will have quite a nice big gap next year where we mistakenly planted scabiosa which won't survive the winter. They hate my shay clay soil and are doing quite badly.

I will, I love dicentras, and tiarellas and have lots of those. My soil retains moisture very well but is not waterlogged.

I can't grow astilbes though - in theory they should work in my garden but they die feet up every time, I have no idea why!!!

Definitely, and made sure they didn't dry out without over watering. My plantsman neighbour was scratching his head too.
