I too keep my use of herbicide / pesticides to an absolute minimum, but I'd not let something take over, or die for the lack of topical applications. ( eg bindweed growing through a mature yew hedge)
I agree its sometimes necessary, I have a neighbour that sprays everything wholesale with pesticides and weedkiller and doesn't consider its drift or that applications are only recommended in specific time frame. He sees one greenfly and sprays the whole garden, I think all the wildlife, goodies and baddies, have migrated to my garden. I don't really mind, however it makes me even more reticent to use anything except spot on weedkiller on the likes of houttuynia.
