As Berghill says, everyones crops have rats and mice. If you live near fields you will get them
There is a bait you can buy from the farmers stores, Neosorexa, its about the only one we find now that kills them, the little green jelly like cubes the council man put down were useless.
Can you get rid of the decking, they just love to live under there, almost everyones compost gets a rat in it at some time, one pair of rats will make 2000 in a year. It annoys me when people say they cant kill them, if no one killed them we wouldnt be here in a few years time!
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Ive put poisoning down everywhere. I didn't want to before but after I found a tick on my leg I'd rather just get rid of them any way I can. No sign of them in house since that day so hopefully they stay out. Neighbours garden still disgusting so environmental health here next week
I'd worry about mice, they carry nasty diseases and are incontinent. You can easily kill any indoors by putting down blue coloured rice grains soaked in poison, You can buy the stuff easily. But don't do this if you have any pets and/or children.
Just wash the veg as said. And I'd cook them too, then you will be totally safe.
Glad you informed the council, it's not fair on decent householders such as you to keep a garden in a mess.
We lived by a river and were infested with rats, in the house and out. I got two feral cats from cat's protection a brother and sister and within 6 weeks no rats of any description. Mind you you know cats, they started off living in a shed outside but slowly and surely became fat and lazy indoor cats

By the way, any nasties in the soil will disappear soon enough. I grow my veggies over a disused septic tank. They are very tasty.

Yes good idea, they are really the only solution. Ticks are not even funny.
As long as you don't mind cat "gifts"
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
