Why oh why do so many people not respect wildlife and habitats, I can't believe what I've just read about the graveyard in Cornwall ! So much habitat and animals wantonly destroyed. I really feel like crying

I've just read about this. It shows that people should make sure their instructions are understood and not hope that their contractors are clairvoyant.
Can we have a link or a bit of explanation?

Looks like a case of poor communication. Very sad but hopefully steps will be taken in future to ensure there's no repeat.

Silly of the maintenance department, especially given the signs. However I'm sure the meadow will soon recover from one badly timed cut.
Shame about the hedgehogs and slow worms - I always walk through long grass/undergrowth swishing around with a cane before strimming/mowing to make sure I disturb any animals who might be there so that they move off to safety. I did it today to make sure there were no frogs in the long grass and buttercups alongside the shady bank - it would be good practice if the council workers were instructed to do that - but it would make the job take longer and consequently council tax payers may have to pay more ........

Certainly an unfortunate event but mistakes happen. The workers can't and shouldn't be expected to read every sign in the area they are working. If the did they would never get the work done.
Sorry KT53 but I totally disagree with your statement. Of course workers should read every sign, it could be life or death!
Agree landgirl, following instructions is part of any job unless you're giving the instructions

I think the problem was that they had been given instructions which they believed over-rode the notices on the site.
and in my experience, council workers aren't expected to question what they've been told to do
