I love Characias too. I have two big clumps of them. When the tall flowers go brown I don my gloves (in case sap gets on skin) and cut the tall ones down to ground level. There are always plenty of small ones which grow up for the next flowering. They are good architectural plants which give structure to a border and they are very drought resistant in my East Anglian garden.
