....or do they open pale and then turn purple when they form into a ball?

I think they're purple,  but I may have missed the first dayimage

I'm sure mine are always purple. I also have alliums of a similar size as purple sensation but are lilac (in the image below, the foreground alliums are lilac and the alliums just above the heads of these are purple sensation)...

can't remember the name of the lilac ones though!

I ask because I have groups of them all over the garden and they have all been as in this photo for a week now with little change.  Some have very pale lilac flowers at the bottom.  Everyone else's I've seen are that beautiful deep purple and I'm wondering if something has gone wrong with mine - or if this is a normal stage before they form a bowl of purple.

they don't look like purple sensation to me and also I think they normally would have flowered and gone over by now.

That's not Purple Sensation.  The shape is wrong, they should be like Paul's pic but darker like the ones in the background.

    I don't recognize that one

I've just had a poke round and I wonder if that's A. schubertii. It's not one I grow so not sure

I bought them as Purple Sensation and was so excited about them.  Mind you, I'm in Scotland and all the flowers in my garden are weeks behind.  But I think you are right nutcutlet, paulk2 - they look too pale.  The tallest is about 18".  I was expecting much taller.  Planted them in in October with the Spring bulbs.  The pack was labelled 'Purple Sensation' as I ordered.  I am so disappointed.

A bit like my tulips. 'Queen of Night' should be very dark puple. were red. Nice but not what it said on the packet

I think they are Shubertii.  I had one out of three flower this year.  I also have purple sensation and they are nothing like the image posted.
