Roses and Russian Vine

Hi

Thanking you all in advance of reading this and even more thanks if you take the time to assist and reply. Im a new poster to this forum and this is my first post on here

We have a relatively small garden and at the bottom of it the garden has around about a 12 foot high wall. We have lived in the property for around 14 years and have covered the wall over that time with an enormous Russian vine! I have recently discovered the wonderful david austin rose collection and have purchased one rose for a patio pot and have thought what the wall would be like covered with climbing or rambling roses from this collection. Having been inspired by many photos recently of wall covered rose collections i have considered this as either an addition or even replacement to the russian vine

My question being what would climbing roses be like growing along side this vine and would this be recommended? The other alternative being would be to remove the vine completely but this is the less favourable option as the job of doing this i do not relish

I do not consider myself to be a gardening expert of any kind so please make any replies as simple as possibleimage

Many thanks

    Hi Paul, welcome

I think roses would give a lot more pleasure than a russian vine.

Absolutely but would they be suitable to grow together. As the vine is such a vigorous growing thing I'm concerned that it may win the battle?

    The russian vine would winimage

I think if you want to grow anything more interesting it will have to go.

The job i am not relishing is removing the vine as it is huge and i don't want to pay anyone to do it either. Time for a rethink

welcome to the forum.imagethe vine would just strangle the rose and you wld have a hell of a job stopping it growing over the rose, cut it off at the base an yank it, shouldn't be too bad unless it is entwined in another large plant. pick all the bits up as you don't want it growing everywhere,

p.s i know what you look like now imageeven if it was sideways lol

It covers an area of about 12 foot high and around about 16 foot across i.e. covering the entire wall and beyond!!

I think to be honest the job of removing it would be to large especially after my recent heart attack its russian vine 1 david austin climbing roses 0

Think i am just going to add more roses elsewhere instead. I just liked the idea of covering the wall at the bottom of the garden with roses but i think i will leave it until I'm feeling a bit healthier!!

might be the best plan, take things easy, my brother 44 had a heart attack last year, so take it slow image

Thank you. This is my second attack which i had end of january. The first was in 2008 had stents on both occasions. My age i was born on the same day kennedy was assasinated not sure what the relevance of that is to either my heart attack or gardening but it weirdly seems easier than saying 51image
