Tall Verbena

Hi, i have this Verbena (at least i think it is, hence the 2nd close up photo), and its around 5 foot tall now and does not seem to show any sign of any flowers......im even doubting it IS a verbena as its not what i was expecting it to look like.....

they are pretty sturdy but rather tall, should i pinch out the growing tips? or is it a bit late for that now? image

any advice would be most appreciated as im not 100% sure what i should do to them

  • If that is V. bonariensis then mine are over two metres tall!

I didn't pinch mine out either but they've somehow become more branched over the last two years anyway. I just cut them down in spring...

Looks like Verbena bonariensis. I'd cut it down to about 2ft, just above a pair of leaves. It will flower later, but you will have more flowers.

I'd never have thought of pinching out Verbena b. You really do learn something new everyday on this site! Verbena b. is meant to be tall and airy, but I can imagine how pinching out will make it branch more, creating a fuller look from fewer plants.

I normally pinch mine out when they're much shorter then leave them to it.
