Nanny - I think people were a lot wiser and more clued about what was poisonous when they all lived close to the land and foraged for roots and leaves as well as growing their own veg.   The move away from agriculture to an industrial economy severed the ties and the knowledge.

WO - indeed, it's not safe to step outside is it?   Not to mention all those germs and diseases being spread by sharing the same air as other people and toxic vehicles.

Vendée - 20kms from Atlantic coast.

I just don't get it. We live in one of the safest countries in the world. No deadly poisonous snakes, no deadly poisonous spiders, no malaria,  no animals to eat you, no hurricanes, no volcanoes, no unsafe water, no drought  November

    In London. Keen but lazy.

Hostafan1, we "gave up Christmas" some years back, (Ma-in_law ruined it for us) When I was a kid by the time various Uncles,A unts married had kids, there was over 30 of us at my Grans, so it was desided pressies for kids only, not adults, no-one was upset or offended.  we still got together had a great time.   Now days unless you are religious, Christmas, is so commercialised.   Eventually, after buying stuff we knew folk didnt like want or need, (and spending the next 6 months paying off credit card)  We told ma-in-Law, we were not buying presents, long complicated story, she was furious, and didnt speak to us for nearly 2 years.  Yet, she had showed me clothes she had been given that were miles too small, put away, so as not to offend the giver.  Have grand kids now, so sort of Christmas!!!
