using greengrocer box for plantings
I have a small lightweight crate we bought cherries in. It's got huge staples to affix the bottom and is a composite wood .It's 6 inches by 1 foot and 5 inches deep. Would the compost just rot through quickly?I don't mind treating the outside, or inside, but don't want to use something that would not be healthy. I thought to do plants in that have shallow roots.Say Pansies or trailing Primulas.I don't grow veggies.

couldn't you use ronseal to coat it in?
Hmmm -I'll look into that thanks
Wish I had space to keep old pots. I saw online someone was growing veggies in old tin cans!
You could paint it pretty and then line it with a piece of compost bag. Unless it's very big, then it would get to heavy when it's full (and watered).. But a smallish crate painted pretty and planted would be adorable ... I'd just line it, fill it and then trim the excess plastic. Hell, now you gave me an idea... I always keep nice crates!
Oh don't forget a drainage hole or two
Yeah I am always drooling over Pintrest projects. I want a gold spray painted pot for an indoor pot plant! Don't HAVE any indoor plants though!
I have to be strict about the pots competing with the plants for attention though. The more decorative the pot , the more super duper the plant has to be!!
I think if you just paint it say, pale green, or a colour in the same shade as the flowers you'll put in the box (or the same colour but in a lighter or darker shade), the box/pot will complement the plant without stealing the scene.
Ooh stoppit I'm seeing me put Swarovski jewels on it- seriously! Yeah a gentle hue would work. x
Snort.... you crack me up!....
Me, I'd just paint the name of the plant on the box in nice, flowing italic script.
Or nice garden sayings... like "Beautiful gardens are not made by sitting in the shade"
Yes I'm visualising it -nice little cottage industry we could get going here! I'll do first one in varnish- ronseal had some negative comments apart from their expensive yacht varnish. I'll scope around.
umm .... some better ideas from the ladies
