Mum's lupins were massacred by aphids last year and ended up a collapsing soggy grey mess. I hacked the tops off, dug them up divided them with a spade, and replanted, discarding the older woodier bits.

This year - healthy vigorous lupins. I can only assume being rejuvenated has helped them cope with the onslaught of aphids.

Mine were attacked last year by those giant American aphids,  luckily I did get some spikes of flowers  first, but they decimated them.  This year, I've had a bit of help from the birds, as Ive been feeding them meal worms near the lupins and they have pecked a few off,  my neighbour has been hosing hers every night, but they keep coming back. Neither of us want to use pesitcides, so its going to be a nature battle!

  • Soapy water should do the trick, yes. Dries them out. Do it late evening when there's less other insects about.
