famous gardeners
have you met any?
both times i visited great dixter i ran into christopher lloyd weeding, with his famous dog tulip.
the first time i told him how beautiful the iris were. he allowed as how they were but people should only be allowed to grow them if they would go out and deadhead them every morning.
the second time i praised the splendid daylilies. again he admitted they might be worth looking at, but that people who didn't deadhead them every day should not be allowed to grow them.
both times he spoke very sternly as though he suspected that i had left behind a garden choked with undeadheaded plants and should get home and take care of it.

I remember being shown round Rosemary Verey's garden and complimenting her on her jacket.
She said " it's only cheap from Liberty, yours is nice too.
I said " it's only cheap from Ralph Lauren", she just laughed.
I'd have loved to have met Christo.
I used to look after the garden of the daughter of Rosemary Alexander, ( founder of the English Gardening School) she was a little intimidating at first , but once we got used to each other, and she realised I knew what I was about, she was lovely.
I bump into Bob Flowerdew from time to time in our local Waitrose as he and the twins load the trolley and head for the checkout - I don't speak to him - he appears to be determinedly 'off duty'
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Dove , why not ask him why he rather pretentiously always has his ponytail hanging over his shoulder?
Other than that effete statement I rather like him
Ohh.. I wish I were friends with Bob Flowerdew, he's such an interesting character. I love his books and listening to him on GQT. Good on you Dove for respecting his privacy.
I've never met any famous gardeners.
Hosta, I think that's just for telly - it's dangling down his back in Waitrose - and how could I accuse him of being pretentious in front of his children - it's unfair to give them more ammunition than they already have
