I've found these which may fit the bill ... Anemone Lord Lieutenant - I've already got anemone but these would be different. Also Meconopsis China Blue or the blue Himalayan poppy (which I've already grown but seem to have killed when I moved them). The poppies may be a little late flowering for my purposes but I'll have a look.
i know! i went out this morning and something cat/fox had dug up a newly planted geum and my dog got on the plant bed and has trodden on my 8 inch dahlia giant and snapped it off at the base grrrr
Welsh poppies - you can get red, yellow and orange, but they won't stay in the container! Dwarf rhododenron/azaleas, Aquilegias. Perennial wall flowers: Bowles' mauve is a good bright purple, and more colours appear every year - I saw a dark red one the other day. Geums start fairly early too.
It won't help this year, but if you plant hardy annuals like calendula and shirley poppies in the late summer/ autumn they come into flower much earlier the next year than ones sown in the spring.
Oooh, thanks - some lovely ideas there. Got welsh poppies - they even grow under a hedge for me, aquilegias, rhodos, azaleas and lots of geums but I love the idea of wall flowers and also pulmonarias. I saw some pulmonarias recently in a local stately home in the garden and they were beautiful. That lovely rich blue that I'm looking for.

Sanjy - it's heart breaking when plants break isn't it?! Recent storms haven't helped either.

Ok brilliant, thanks - I've googled the Blue Ensign and they look tremendous.
