Try sowing forget me nots everywhere and let them self seed - This is the second year that I have found no slugs or snails anywhere near these!! Are we missing something! Went to Potager this morning slugs and snails everywhere but nowhere near self sown FMN's. - Re Gardening Roses (for watering cans!) - Where can I find them??
Special what now??? I just used a normal watering can that I had lying about... the rose was not 'fine' at all and I would never use it near my seedlings- it's what I call 'coarse' but certainly not 'special'... :S
I thought these things were microscopic- whyfore all this need for a special, coarse attachment to a watering can?
My forget me nots last year were harbouring lots of slugs. I have pulled out any near the delphiniums. Two mallards in the garden are more interested in seed via the back door. Hostas near the pond come up intact. I put that down to frogs.
as i mentioned in an earlier post (you may have missed it) the big leopard slugs, the brown ones with either darker stripes or spots do not eat fresh vegetation and actually eat other slugs, i actually didn't believe it as i always thought thay were the baddies and they used to go in the green bin but i leave them to it now and my garden is a much less eaten place, i did actually test this out by arranging a 'chance' meeting in the garden between leopard slug & smaller slug and sure enough smaller slug was eaten
Ok Verdun thanks for the heads up! Most of the slugs I'm seeing right now do seem to be smaller like they've just risen but they're starting on my Lupins.. However in the summer we suffer greatly from Spanish slugs in the back garden I don't think I've ever seen a leopard slug Sanjy but I'll keep a look out and welcome it with open arms!
I may have salted a leopard slug last night Sorry buddy...
I'm only growing delphiniums in tubs now so I can surround them with a ring of salt. Any delphs planted in the borders last year have disappeared without trace. I have lupins sitting in pots on the garden table, unwilling to throw them to the wolves *sigh*
Forget-me-nots never seem to suffer attacks in my garden. Ditto aquilegias, toadflax, yarrow, foxgloves, harebells, wild marjoram, primroses or cowslips. Oh and campion.
