Melons and cucumbers

  • I am growing cucumbers and melons in the same 8x6 greenhouse (at opposite ends. The cumber is a "Femspot" hybrid and is producing so much that I don't know what to do wiv 'em.....apart from eating and giving away, of course. The melons (2 of them, both "Outdoor Wonder" Gallia style hybrids) however are just the reverse.....masses of unpollinated flowers.

Do you think I should pinch out some of the excess flowers and treat the remainder with a small paintbrush?

My melon too has loads of flowers but no melons yet . I ve had 2 very tasty cucumbers with more on the way. Is this a coincidence?

  • I have exactly the same problem. In fact all the flowers on the melon plants seem to be male so I don't see how I'll ever get any fruit!

  • At long last I seem to have Melons on my plants! One (about golf ball size) on one plant and two more (both no bigger than pea's) on the other. I intend to pick them when they reach about tennis ball size. As this is my first year trying melons I am reasonably pleased with this result. Can any kind soul who has experience of growing melons give me any tips for the future?

Don't pick your melons by size - wait until they're ripe! image  You'll know they're ripe when they smell sweet and have started to crack around the stem image
