Melons and cucumbers

This is my first season with a greenhouse and was looking forward to growing melons and cucumbers along side tomatoes and peppers. However when reading up about melons in an Alan Titchmarsh book he warned never to grow them in the same greenhouse as cucumbers. I have melon Ogen and Cucumber Burpless Tasty Green.

The cucumbers can be grown outdoors but that really defeats the plan to grow produce in new greenhouse!

Is it a 'no,no' or not? The book was from 1988 so have things moved on since then?

It's not a no no Kayte, many people grow them successfully, they both need space though so grow at opposite ends of the GH.

  • I grew both melons and cucumbers in my greenhouse last year with fantastic results, alongside tomato's and peppers.

I am doing the same this year also but currently we only have the start of cucumber flower, the others have yet to flower.

Growing unwins cucumbers and water melons from unwins and honeydew melons from seeds.

I have an 8x10 greenhouse and they are at opposite ends of the greenhouse but assuming this would make no difference if there were to be problems anyway

Bags pots or GH bed is all fine Kayte, and high potash feeds are the usual feed once flowering has commenced.

Cucs and melons are really more compatible than cucs and tomatoes are.  They both like humid conditions whereas tomatoes prefer dry air.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

    1. I use big pots, and feed once a week with miracle grow  tomato food . I mix it in the watering can .and I feed as soon as little fr u it's appear  but so long as you have some flowers I should think you can feed.
    2. I find that F1.    Hybrids  are better  cucumbers To buy . They  don't have any flowers to remove. Bob's advice is sound regards cucs and  tomatos
