Garden newbie: help with weed.

Hi guys. New to gardening and need some help. When end I moved into my new house there was a patch of weird that was very clover like about 2m square in the one corner of the grass. Would stones or bark or anti weed matting in the border area reduce the risk of it coming back?

The border are about 12 inches deep from grass to fence.

After any advice on what's best.
