thanks for the info Ot2 but iv'e already planted them in hado pots so i'll give it a go a go next time .does anyone know if there's owt you can spray on the beds that will get rid of these little black slugs because they seem to be invisible to me even with my specs on ? D.D.
Well, a month on from being planted in the soil, a handful of beans appear to have germinated. They all look pretty unhealthy. The seeds haven't detached from a few and where they have they look very straggly. I've got plenty of seed beans to start again with (probably using methods suggested here) but do these 'symptoms' suggest a duff batch I wonder?
Nemaslug Slug Killer contains millions of microscopic nematodes that kill slugs above and below ground. It's not cheap and anaplication will last for about 6 weeks.. Treat the ground about a week before you plant and then another treatment to kill off any unhatched slugs
You can buy it from most main seed suppliers. Marshalls is one of the cheapest suppliers at £9.95 for a40x2m pack or 19.95 for a 100x2m pack plus P&P
Cobra French Beans from T&M. Might just try the kitchen paper thing as have plenty left. Probably moving house in two months' time though so had wanted a harvest before then!! Probably too late now?
I got a 99% sucess with my Cobra FB's using the method I stated. Placed the tub in a warm airing cupboard and they started to sprout in 3-4 days. Then potted up and were ready for planting out in a couple of weeks.
Some of the beans were the remains from a pack bought last year and the rest were from a couple last years crop where I left a couple of pods to go to seed and saved the beans in an air tight tub.
This is my first year of trying to grow veg, sowed 6 seeds of "Blue Lake" French bean and only one germinated. Started off in 7cm pots on a warm windowsill, my one plant has been potted on and is doing well. I did a second sowing last week so fingers crossed for better results this time.
It all depends on the weather and temperature and to an extent as to what part of the UK you are in. I live in Essex and if I plant out in May expect to have my first pickings mid to late July, but this year so far has been rather cold, so the growth has been a bit on the slow side compaired to previous years
Hi Reg. So thank you, I did the kitchen paper towel thing on Thursday and most of the bean seeds have sprouted already! Do I let them know grow more now or should I quickly get them into pots / modules? Best to do that before getting them in the ground or could they go straight in?

What kind of beans? My french beans were sprouted in pots in a coldframe and are now in beds.

Ok, I'll definitely try this later... What do you think the timeframe for germination to harvest is likely to be?
