Morning Guys I want to plant a second crop but the first lot of seeds only half germinated. To check if seed is viable is it the same as lawn seed (little dampcompost,in a bag in the dark) haven't got enough to plant double and hope
I was a bit short of healthy French bean plants, after a couple of setbacks, so I ordered some more seeds from Moreveg online. They came in a few days and are now safely tucked up in a the soil. It isn't too late for French beans and probably runners, but it's a bit late for broad beans.
I have very poor germination from my french beans planted indoors in cells - I'm going to plant them out and intersperse the ground with more seed and hope they will like it better outdoors!
The wigwam goes in for the runners today - a few painted lady and I'm also trying a Wisley one - all my gardening is full of hope and a bit hit or miss, but absolutely full of flowers right now.
I've had a problem with some 'Cobra' french beans I bought. Most of what I buy I start in modules to give them a head start before the slugs get at them but I thought I'd give them a go straight in the ground given that it's been a warm May and I'd bought some nematodes and already watered them in.
So far - three weeks on - I haven't had a single bean germinate, probably having planted 30-odd! There's been plenty of sun, it's a raised bed so I think the soil must be warm enough, watering but not overwatering in between rain (hasn't been much of that). All my peas, tomatoes etc are growing v well.
Maybe the beans are only a day or two away from sprouting but this seems like an awfully long time for germination?
Either way, I guess I've still got time given it's not quite June yet to plant them in modules in the coldframe to give them a headstart but I'm just a bit surprised it's taken so long.
Realistically, should I assume the seeds have rotted or or will patience prevail? The alternative is that the squirrel family nearby have paid a visit... I've seen them scrabbling around in that bed a bit but it seems unlikely that they'd have so efficiently removed every single seed?

Sorry Dove brain not in gear with keyboard
I bought a bag of my favourite bean seeds, Firestorm, from ebay, cheap, quick delivery and all but 2 germinated.
Its not too late to buy a fresh packet where you know they will all germinate.
Better get a wiggle on though, time is running out.
Will have to visit GC
but never seem to return with just what I went for
