runner & French bean help

Hi, Last week I planted my runner and French beans outside in a pot. Since then the leaves have gonna discoloured and crispy from the bottom up. When I planted them I put some grass cuttings on top but have since removed as I thought this might have been the issue. This was a few days ago and they are still continuing to deteriorate. I planted them in multi purpose compost and added some fertiliser in the mix. I am new to gardening and would really appreciate some help as I think they are going to die if I don't do something soon. One of the runner bean plants has since started growing more flowers but these are going discoloured too! Please help!! Thanks, Natalie

  • Hi Dovefromabove,

Sure, the first pic are the runner beans and the second the french beans.

    Thanks

That looks like cold damage to me - did you harden them of before planting out?

I would give up on those and plant some runner bean seeds directly in the soil.  There is still plenty of time and many gardeners will only just be planting their runner seeds outside.  image

Logan, you've mentioned that problem several times on various threads.  What device and browser are you using?

  • Hi Logan, the picture doesnt show  initally in the thread but after clicking on it i was able to see the picture..

Bob, Yes i hardened them for a week before, putting them outside in the day but in the garage when it was really windy.

Do you think there is any hope for them at all if i start covering them now?

Were they 'hardened off' during that lovely warm week we had - and then the overall temperatures dropped the following week, especially overnight?

So although they'd been outside they'd not really adjusted to the lower temperatures image

Even if you cover them now they'll have been set back.  You might just as well sow some fresh ones - they'll catch up image

Don't worry, we've all done it image

  • Shall I grow from seed or try to buy some that have already grown a bit?

Thanks everyone for your advice! image

I would grow from seed image. I'm going to sow mine tomorrow or so.

I always sow them directly outside, but never before the so called "Ice Saints" have been. This year that was from 11 to 14 May and last night we had another frost!

I've been growing beans this way for over 40 years and have always had good crops image.

    Good luck! image
