I'm the stuborn obnoxious type and the more someone tells me I can't do something, the more determined I become. If it were me I would put that fence right back up, get a camcorder or use my phone camera and hide on my land until I got them on film trespassing and/or causing criminal damage.
Don't let the neighbours get their way Shirley! Maybe hide a wildlife camera on the block to film trespassers. I'm not popular with my neighbours as they had apparently been allowed to use my driveway as their own when the old home was on it! It is your land not theirs! Invite local groups such as the Brownies to use the land for picnics. With legitimate users around, illegal users will find their access limited. Good luck and I'd love to see a photo of the land too.
Shirley - some people are very resistant to change, and you have changed things. You now have something and they haven't. They didn't think of doing it themselves. They will get used to it - eventually! But you will have to have the courage of your convictions.
Put up good fencing and report wilful damage to the local Community Police Officer. Let the local schools know that you're trying to create a wildlife area and that if it works they can use it (by arrangement) for Nature Studies etc. Children are very good at influencing the adults around them.
Good luck
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Dove is correct.. You have to set out from the start your intentions and fence it off - if you dont theres a danger that the neighbours will simply think your not serious and its business as usual.
Fence it off and in a few weeks they will have got the message. They may not like it at first but that psychological barrier is important especially when they have convinced themselves that before it was theres to do with as they please.
Aren't people vile at times? To damage your fence is disgraceful. If you can set up a camera it will help to catch anyone, but it's very presence may be enough to deter them. Don't let them bully you or drive you away. Keep at it Shirley and good luck.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I live next to a public footpath which is a constant source of noise and vandalism. Everyone wants it closed including the police but it's public right of way so there's two chances of that.
Real advice from someone who knows the perils of the public using your garden as a dumping ground and litter bin, use the strongest fencing you can afford or you will be repeating the process several times over. Persistence wins in the end, I have less trouble these days than I used to

Excellent! I'll dig out my old camouflage gear
