i'm on south east coast and mine hasn't done a thing, it's been planted over winter in a pot , i dug it up and it has little roots and the teeniest sprout so i replanted it about 4 weeks ago and still nothing.
I am coming to the conclusion that they don't like being dug up. I didn't mulch the one I left out last winter - just left it out but then we didn't have a very hard winter. I'm in East Anglia. But I will leave them out again but mulch in case of a colder winter. Mind you - mine are in pots so easy to bring in if the weather's likely to be extremely cold.
probably not haha but i thought it should have been up by now and previously hadn't been undisturbed, are yours planted deeply? when i first planted it i'm sure the instructions said to plant it with the top of corm/tuber almost out of the soil, then i read it should be planted deeper so it is now deeper
Bonsai-Marc, you have you canna on the bed by a window, how cosy.! I have never been able to overwinter before, but last year, , cut back, left it its, pot, unheated greenhouse, its now sprouting, and about 6 inches high. Begonia tubers, now in their pots and outside to harden off. Joe Swift said on Friday Gardeners World, he cannot stand Hanging Baskets!!!! My Canna will go outside at the end of May, we are in the South, so it hardens off, before staying out for the summer..
i think i buried it too deep as i dont see any reason for it to have died off over winter
well its outside now but i was hoping for some show by now, its been a mild winter in south london and was boxed up in garage
i have a perfect spot for it to go in and wanted quite large, it did great last year, so hoping but for now i have 2 replacements put in i just dont know what colour. my original was the black knight
This is the canna I stored in the garage in the pot all winter and put in my greenhouse a few weeks ago to warm up/keep moist. It's not doing a huge amount - I only planted it in the ground a few days ago.
The front two pots of these are the same type of canna as the top image - these are the one I removed from their pot and stored in the garage without soil all winter, having split into 2. They don't look like they are coming back. I found it hard to split them as their roots were so entwined so maybe I killed the plant. The top canna this image is the canna I did nothing with - I left it in this spot on my deck all winter. It's a canna tropicana and a different variety to the others (not sure what they are). It's done the best by far but maybe due to variety and/or liking it's winter spot outdoors - a relatively warm spot in the corner of my house/conservatory.
