Should my canna be sprouted yet?

Bonsai-MarcBonsai-Marc Posts: 444

had a nice canna last year.  then dug up and overwintered in shed in newspaper

moved house and saw it was sending some shoots out so i have now potted and put in bedroom in front of window.

must be 6 weeks or so now and i have seen no growth appear above the pot.  i have made sure that didnt go too mad with the watering.

wondering if i should try and dig it up to see if is ok?  im keen to put into its new spot in new garden

im se/kent and seems the same, it was superb last year.

cut down and dug up for winter and put away in a box, then saw some shoots so potted up to grow ready for the garden.

hoping doesnt take a whole season to just grow a small amount if any at all.

was large and prominent last year

Are you growing them with some heat. I always start mine off inside, until the end of May.

I bought 3 cannas last July which I had in big tubs. In the autumn I placed one tub on my deck in the corner of my house wall/conservatory 9the warmest spot outdoors) and another in the garage still in the tub. The third I removed from the tub, took the soil off as much as possible and put it in the garage loose in it's tub.

I moved the ones in my garage to my greenhouse about 8 weeks ago to start the warming up process, and then to my deck 2 weeks ago (none have had any frost).

The one I left on the deck the whole time has come back the best and is now several inches high. The one I left in the tub in the garage is only an inch or 2 high and the one I took out of the soil is not showing any growth - I am doubtful it will come back.

So next year I will do nothing and leave them on my deck!

My location: Histon, near Cambridge, UK
