As has been said, Cannas are very thirsty and hungry plants. They can actually be used as marginal plants.
Mine are still indoors, in the living room [ drives OH mad ] and will not go outside till end of May or early June.
In my experience they are less hardy than Dahlias.

Good News. I have just spoken to Keith at Hart Canna and he has said that I should be seeing growth on Shenandoah by now. He has offered to bring a growing one to the Malvern show on Saturday so that I can collect it. 10 out of 10 for them.
