Feeding Cannas

in Plants
Hi Folks,
This is the first year I have attempted to grow Cannas. I have Durban and Shenandoah both in large pots since February. The Durban has started to shoot, no sign of the other one yet. I have read that they are very hungry plants and need regular feeding my questions are
As they have been in the pots for more than 6 weeks should I start feeding them now?
If so what is the best feed for them.
Hope someone can help.

Hi Yvie. I've always used tomato food for mine and I expect you can feed a bit now if there's some good growth on the Durban. I just fed once every couple of weeks or so through the summer - or when I remembered
I'd say if there's no sign of growth on the other one that it's not made it though. I'd expect them to be growing a bit at this time of year. Are they undercover?

Hi Fairygirl, yes they've been in the greenhouse until very recently. We haven't had a frost here since I have bought the pots outside. Don't know whether to dig up Shenandoah and take a look at it. What do you think?
I'd expect it to be showing a good bit by now if it's been sheltered. Don't know if it's worth poking at it - if you have room perhaps just leave it for now and give it a bit more time. Doesn't sound too hopeful but perhaps someone else here has grown it and can advise more. Verdun grows cannas.
Mine didn't make it through the winter - should have brought it into the house - the temporary cold frame arrangement wasn't nearly enough. Wasn't that bothered as I didn't really like it!

We've had a relatively mild winter here Fairy and I followed all the instructions provided by Hartcanna (the nursery I bought them from) so I will be disappointed if they don't flower.
I split 5 largish 2 year old plant and ended up with 64 babies. Even some of those I thought were not worth have sprouted and to-day I had to pot many into bigger pots.
Gently strip away the compost with your finger to see if there's anything underground shooting. If you use your finger tip, you're unlikely to cause any damage.
Thanks folks, Ill have a look tomorrow, I potted them in john innes 2 and added dried manure when I planted, didn't put any FBB in though.
Hope it's ok Yvie - not sounding too promising though

Well, I looked at the canna in the pot and there are no shoots at all. It is firm though and doesn't look as if anything is wrong with it. Should I 'do a Vernon' and call them up and complain or wait awhile?
Sorry Verdun, don't know where that came from
