I'm happy with the concept of the programme , and the money spent, I just can't believe these were the best 6 people who applied, and that they think they're good enough to have a career in Garden Design.
I did it for 20 odd years and trust me, you need to have a lot more to offer than these 6.
They all come across as lovely people, but that , in itself, doesn't attract clients.
Sorry if that's seen as judgmental or offensive. It's just my opinion.
I'd agree with you Hostafan. It has to be seen merely as entertainment, and it's simply capitalising on a current winning formula. If it gets people interested in gardening then it's no bad thing of course but I worry that the participants think they'll be able to just go out the next day and compete with the 'big boys' on an equal footing. It's like X factor etc - at best, misleading for the majority, and at worst, likely to lead to serious disappointment.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Well I'm very happy for my licence fee to go towards gardening programmes. Better than spending it on Top Gear.

Well, as someone who does have qualifications in a very vaguely related field ... I have to agree with you Hosta.
Joe S has just said that 'a Chelsea garden is all about the plants; - that's reassuring, but I'm not convinced ...
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
now, Dove surely you know it's all about theatre!!!
example : Steph, the lovely young lady who works at Waitrose, (good girl )
" it's my take on formal. Formal with a twist" in other words, it's not formal.
If a client wants a formal garden, then it's up to the designer to deliver it.

Wise words Fairygirl.
I agree entirely.
I'm glad folk have come round to Joe Swift, as many have commented negatively about him in the past.
He's a very knowledgeable guy who has successfully run his own design business for many years.
He delivers advice with good grace, without sounding patronising or condescending.
Bit like the wildlife programme I watched last night, poor old folks all desperate to be the next Chris Packham
It was quite sad really, convincing yourself you are special because ordinary isn't good enough
