Acer tree help - drooping

chris1566chris1566 Posts: 11
Hi I've had an acer tree for just over a year and earlier this year when the weather was nice it sprouted new leaves and was a lovely reddish colour. However now all of the leaves are drooping and I'm just wondering whether i can help the plant, what caused it, etc? I live in a flat in London and the tree is on a sheltered balcony that gets plenty sunlight just in case that helps. Any help would be great. Chris

Has the Acer's soil always been kept moist? They really do not appreciate dry soil.

Hi, yeah its always watered through a saucer underneath the pot. Unless that may mean all of the soil hasn't been moist?

Not all Acers appreciate strong sunlight, especially young ones

If you stick your finger in the roots is the soil wet, damp or dry?

It's damp, not too wet though. And it is out in the sun but it's where it has always been so would have thought if it affected it i would have noticed before now and it wouldn't have done so well last year? It survived summer last year and thrived yet now it's not paticularly stunt and it's drooping. Maybe i can move it and see how it gets on.

This may be nothing to worry about. Some acer species, particularly some of the delicate palmatum types, have a natural habit for their new leaves to hang down for a while before they pump themselves up to their normal horizontal position. Do the leaves feel floppy and unhealthy or are they still turgid and healthy looking but just hanging down? Was it already in leaf last year when you bought it? Is this the first time that you have watched it come into leaf? Do you know what species it is?

This is the first year we have watched it come into leaf as it was already in leaf when we bought it. When it came into leaf this year it looked healthy and the leaves were in a normal position, but they have drooped in the last 2 weeks. I'm not sure of the species to be honest. I'm trying to upload a photo but the website seems to be having problems with it.The leaves feel thinner than usual and soft.

That looks OK to me. I think they are just juvenile leaves.  Give it a while and I think those leaves will lift up to their correct position. Keep checking the soil to make sure it doesn't dry out but be careful not to over water it either.
