I just pulled up some creeping buttercup because I've read it is so invasive but it was looking nice near my little pond even without flowers and I love buttercups. I have a very small garden though and don't want it getting too out of control. I'm pretty relaxed toward weeding. Anyone know if it's possible to keep creeping buttercup in check?
Creeping buttercup's not too bad to get rid of really. I was once told that you could use c.b to out-compete ground elder, and then once the g.e was exhausted it was relatively easy to get shot of the c.b., but I've never tried it and I have my doubts. I just dislike the way creeping buttercup manages to disguise itself as a hardy geranium and infiltrate the border!!
I wish I could identify true weeds I've picked over my wildflower patch and sown more seeds on the extra bit of cleared grass next to it I'm sure I've left many weeds in including buttercup cos I'm not sure if it's geranium I've lost them in the past because I haven't seen their labels and thrown them in the bin.
I often give things the benefit of the doubt if I can't identify them and keep an eye on them to see what they're turning into. I've got loads of common or garden periwinkle (vinca major) and there's many who would view that as a weed, and even more of that large pink thug of a geranium, which is making its annual bid for world domination as I type...

Water ravens (geum rivale) is lovely. I've never found it to be a problem.
That's the trouble with common names. I have 2 different plants in my mind for water avens and cinquefoil
In the sticks near Peterborough
Thank you nut, I have checked Google images to confirm it is cinquefoil
This is a giant PITA for me as I live next to a public footpath smothered in it and it is costing me an arm and leg to spray (council do nothing )
