Which weeds do you tolerate

  • I start out welcoming wild chance visitors but find some try to take over, then they become weeds. Red campion and red dead nettle have received ASBOs. Forget me nots are well behaved and self limiting. This year alkanet has appeared, and I wait to see how it behaves.

It has a well-deserved reputation - not easily controlled unless you have vast acreage!

I've just googled alkanet, thinking it was a fish treatment brand name, only to find its the mysterious plant my Dad has in his garden. Its been out-competed by the foxgloves I planted image

Red Valerian I have too, very pretty.

  • Ta, Dovefromabove, I'll keep alkanet under supervision!

In the short-term possibly - I'll put money on the alkanet winning image

don't let the alkanet in, it is a nightmare, I've spent the last two years trying to clear mine, it has really deep roots so this year I'm having to resort to chemicals.

Forget me nots I love, and I'm actually trying to grow red campion, to bring back memories of Cornwall in spring.  bluebells, campion and wild garlic ! such a beautiful combination.

I let the brambles grow, but I may have an ulterior motive image

At the moment I'm letting the dandelions grow and flower but intend to cut them down before they seed and then hit them (and plantains) with a spot weedkiller. They are rife at the moment because I gave my lawn a serious treatment to try and regenerate it and as expected they are outgrowing the grass!

Nettles I sort of let grow for a bit and then get them into the compost image

Yes Peanuts love that combination too, get it in the Derbyshire Dales. All my campion came from a pinch of seed I took from one growing through a hedge at a National Trust property in Wales. Now it's everywhere, but its favourite combination (not mine!) seems to be with orange Welsh poppies. Maybe because they are Welsh?

  • a weed is just a plant in the wrong place,

but dog violets are now swamping my garden as well as grape hyacinths so I'm having a big clear of those right now. I never thought of valerian as a weed, and I have some lovely self-seeded pink campion in flower now, but just one generous plant.  I suppose I move anything that is killing a plant I've specifically planted...and I too have loads of orange and yellow welsh poppies....surely they're not weeds?

Creeping buttercup, pearlwort and chickweed are my big problems, and in the front Crocosmia grow as weeds. I pulled out buckets of bulbs when preparing the soil for a new hedge. I have given up, and anyway they are quite nice. Pity they crowd out anything else.
