Newly planted leylandi dead?

Hi guys, I recently planted 40 leylandi conifers I bought from eBay which came bare rooted and I planted them with compost but since planting them about 5 weeks ago most of them have started going really brown and brittle....are these dying/dead or are they still salvageable as I'm still watering them and don't want to be wasting my time if there not going to survive.....any help much appreciated ????

Hi, did you soak them well before planting? Bare rooted need a good number of hours soaking before they get planted up.

No I didn't Rosa I read that afterwards....as I'm not very clued up with gardening I just banged them straight in but now I'm paying the price.iv read that bare rooted conifers how a low survival rate so I'm gonna bite my lip and purchase 40 new potted plantsimage

I was just thinking you'd had a lucky escape, Leylandii yuk. Enormous thugs. Thuya would be better.

Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Are you sure you want a Leylandii hedge?  They grow huge very quickly, require a lot of maintenance and totally impoverish the soil around them so that nothing else will grow.

There are lots of other much more interesting hedge choices (and most of them are easier to grow and look after) image

Oh yes, let them go.   Sorry.

  • yes bin them. They will take thousands off the value of you're home and make it totally unsellable if you ever want to move.
