Dianthus dying over winter? Please help :)

  MY Dianthus are one type, spread across a large-ish area at front of free draining border

  half is sheltered by an old gate and they were twice the size of the other half in mid-winter

  Now they are faster along than the others that are just starting to put on growth

  Verdun's suggestions are best, two year old cuttings will sustain the best summer flowering
