Knotweed or Bindweed?

Hi thanks in advance for any advise given in reply to this.  We have convinced ourselves that we have a dose of Japanese Knotweed in our garden.  Before I begin the process of dealing with it with tree stump killer I just want to make sure that the weed is what we think it is.

The top of the shoots in one looks like bindweed but the bottom of the plant looks odd. Can you put on a few more photos.

  • that's convulvula or bindweed like you say its a nightmare tbh make sure you get rid of all the roots otherwise it will grow back

There are two species of bindweed in the UK, field and hedge. That is too robust for field, and the growth form matches hedge. It also looks to be single stemmed. As far as I know JKW is self supporting, and multiply branched. Yours looks like a red stemmed hedge bindweed, the stuff I see is green stemmed. The roots are long, thick and white. If I am right, then it is easy to control. Get a milk bottle, half fill with glyphosate, half bury in the ground, then take the ends of the weed, crumple the leaves, and stuff as much as you can into the bottle, making sure you do not break the stem off. The aim is for it to absorb the poison and carry it to the roots. It takes a few weeks to act.

Hedge Bindweed can have very very very long roots, about 6-12 inches below ground. Sadly it often creeps over from neighbouring properties.

Incidentally, if I am wrong, you will know when they flower. Bindweed has large white trumpet shaped flowers, knot weed hasn't. Oh and there are some other related vines Such as Russian.

I think the bottom shows some of the root.

Yes I think you're right about the root, Leif image

I agree that the second picture is definitely Convolvulus / bindweed.  Ironically, it has attractive, white bell shaped flowers but its roots go down really deep and is difficult to clear.  Repeat glyphosate application is usually recommended.

It does look like Japanese knotweed to me folks.  Hope I'm wrong

Think you are wrong, on this very rare occasion Verdun image - that looks like a sturdy shoot of Hedge Bindweed - with the base of the shoot having been underground it's blanched - there'll be a rhizome down below.

Bruise the leaves and treat with glyphosate and leave until the whole plant is brown and dead - that means that the active ingredients have travelled back to the roots and killed them.  If you pull the plants up too soon the roots will not have been killed and will grow again.

Maybe Verdun misled by the root showing as a branched white stalk. I was. It's easier to give a correct ID if a plant is left as it is and photographed from different anglesimage
