Wow Christine that's a great before and after on your front garden really pretty and love the bench being out the front too
re your top bit in the back garden, are you looking for planting ideas? Or?
I am looking for any ideas, was going to do a pond in that circle bit, but for little old me its too hard on my own, the ground needs levelled a tiny bit long screening but yes please ideas would be really appreciated as im stuck xxxx
I was going to suggest a pond too! That would be lovely especially as you'd have a view of it in winter months.
Perhaps some shrubs and perennials for scent, or a small apple tree with some other planting for food - strawbs, rasps etc if it's suitable? What is the soil and aspect in that area?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I have no idea what the soil is like, to start i thought it was weed killed but there has been a few weeds coming up. The pond would be fab but i just cant dig it all out and i cant get hold of stones or slabs, my dad cant dig so am stuck, sons are miles away with their jobs, soits a fab idea but cant manage it.
Thats the north facing side, but up on the top you get the sun from 3pm til it goes down.
A few small trees or large shrubs - get a few evergreens to give you something through winter - and you can then have some shade loving, woodland type plants in the main area, as the taller planting will create more shade. On the fringes you could have plants which are happy with a bit of sun. A gravel or bark mulch gives you access or you could create a more structured path.
There's loads of shade lovers to choose from, and you can add bulbs for colour and form from late winter through to summer.

Thanks Fairygirl where would i put the trees? Ive got 2 large hostas out front, am i right in thinking i can dig them up in autumn and put a spade through them and divide them up?
Path i like the sound of but where lol? am a lost cause xxx
Can you take a pic of the whole area at the back including all the boundary? That will help with advice on what to put where. I'd suggest from the pic, the back right hand corner and also down the left side for background, bigger shrubs or small trees. If you can do a rough layout of the area on paper to give you an idea of size, then you can see how much room you have for larger plants. Once you establish that, you can play around with smaller stuff in front. I'd do that before deciding where to put the path unless you want a structured look which might be tricky with the shape and space you have.
Hostas are easy to split - just put a spade through them yes. If you do it in autumn. pot the pieces up for replanting in spring.
