the actual shrub is very small, We have lived here for 18 months now ( 6 months renovating so we didnt really do the garden but knew it was there) The old man next door to me, sold us the house and his mum used to live here, he said that the garden hasnt much changed, so im assuming his mum would of planted this. So i would say that its a slow grower or its as tall as its going to become. It also has a very slight smell to it, My husband said it smells a little like a rose, but only very slightly..
It's not a magnolia, but I think it it from the Rosacea family, i.e. a decorative almond (don't know if there is any such thing, doesn't look like a normal almond), or a type of crab apple, or may be even a decorative plum?

Are the leaves right?
In the sticks near Peterborough
I thought Magnolia too. Its something about the way the flowers sit on the branches. Its like a pink Stellata
It reminds me of Magnolia × loebneri
Yvie, you might have it - have a scroll through these pics of Mag x loebneri 'Leonard Messel' https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Magnolia+%C3%97+loebneri&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=jrcqVfi_L-i57gbR3oCYDw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=683&bih=317#tbm=isch&q=Magnolia+%C3%97+loebneri+leonard+messel
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
No idea either, but the foliage in the 3rd photo in "pictures" doesn't look like magnolia at all.
Im no expert but to me it doesnt look like magnolia
On closer inspection the stamens in Tanya's pics are different to the ones in the Magnolia pictures - back to the drawing board Miss Marple

Wow, that really is beautiful. I'd love to know what it is too. nothing useful to add though.
Good luck and congrats on having such a beauty in your garden.
