    Looking like wild cherry suckers

I agree, Fidget.  (Should have believed you when you said it before...  image)  That would explain why they are impossible to dig up, with roots which spread across the garden.

The question is, where are they suckering from?  If they're coming up from residual roots, say, from a cherry tree which has been cut down in the garden, they can safely be treated with weedkiller.  But if there's a cherry tree next door, then applying weedkiller to the suckers may kill the existing tree.  (I speak from experience when working as a gardener...  image)

Drfishflan, can you have a look around for a cherry tree nearby?

Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • Thanks very much guys

And advice on which weed killer to use... asked the neighbours and no matching trees around.

    Thanks again

I would use a brushwood killer like SBK, following the instructions carefully.  If you're near a good garden centre you could ask them for up-to-date advice - garden chemicals are changing all the time.  Good luck!  image
